Road Trip

We just got back from a week-long visit with family.

We talked in the car… when we weren’t eating… which wasn’t often… unless our name was Dan.

[long silence]
Me: Are shrunken heads really shrunken heads or are they just made out of coconuts?
Dan: I don’t know.
Me: I wouldn’t think you could actually shrink a head because it’s made of bones. Do cannibals shrink heads manually or by magic?

****

Laylee: Mom. Those people have all kinds of clothes in the back of their car. That probably means that wherever they’re going, they’re probably gonna spend the night, right?
Me: Yep. It sure does. Just like we did at grandma’s house!
Magoo: Truck. It’s ee truck!!
Me: Have you noticed that Magoo is way less verbal than Laylee was at his age?
Dan: Mmmmhmmm.
Me: Maybe it’s because he’s a boy.
Dan: [silence]
Me: Have you noticed that I’m way more verbal than you were at my age?

I always thought shrunken heads were really heads…but now you have me second guessing it. You can’t really shrink a bone. Those witch doctors are all quacks.

    ~snickers…like…a lot~

  5. Mir says:

LOL about you being more verbal.

Second kids CAN’T be as verbal as firsts. They can’t get a word in edgewise!

  6. heather says:

our husbands can get together and enjoy some silent conversations. My husband is great at them too!

  7. Awesome Mom says:

You can actually buy a shrunken head. My sisters got one for my dad as a gift. It is made from leather and other cow parts but looks like a human head. Just thought you should know.

  8. Cheryl says:

Oh, golly, my husband won’t talk while he drives, either! Drives me nuts! If I’m driving, I HAVE to have conversation or I go to sleep.
I love hearing the comments the kids make, too. Almost every trip we take I always hear #2 in the back saying “That was the best time we ever had!” I’m glad she’s enthusiastic. 🙂
Sounds like you had a great time!

  9. Jenny says:

Haa! This made me grin this morning. I’m more verbal as well. 🙂

  10. mother of the wild boys says:

“Have you ever noticed that I’m way more verbal than you were at my age?” LOL!!

I love how you can take those little happenings of family life, and say it in a way that is so identifiable and funny! You are my writing mentor!

Kudos on the traveling vacation…isn’t it nice to sleep in your own bed again?

Real shrunken heads are really made of human heads. We’ve seen them at museums. They skin the skull and use only the skin and facial features so the finished product is small, leathery and boneless. Deboned, if you will. It seems funny at first, but the more you think about it, the more grotesque and sad it becomes, especially since many were made of missionaries who lived and died among the headhunting tribes.

  12. Beth says:

You guys are hilarious!!!! Sorry we didn’t get to meet up. Would have been great! Maybe next time?? Pretty please???

  13. Lei says:

that’s punny! (my little boy’s language – we seem to be right on the same track, no?)

  14. This: “Have you noticed that I’m way more verbal than you were at my age?” cracks me up.

  15. mwahahahahahahahaha. Dan is less verbal than when he was your age. 🙂

  16. sarah k. says:

I saw a shrunken head today. And a shrunken torso. Yech. I’m pretty sure it was real. I tried to call you on the 4th, but I think I called the wrong number and got only a message, and then Derek wouldn’t help me find blah blah blah I’m really just lazy. Then we went to San Francisco for the shrunken heads. I’m sorry we missed each other. Oh, wait. When are you going to Chicago? We’re moving in a few weeks, and Dayton is only a few hours from Chicago.
